Once again hip hop returns as a hot commodity on the international music exchange. And there isn’t any danger in that – we’ve had enough of the likes of Will Smith and the Puff Daddy-MTV set to last us a decade.

In light of this it seems ridiculous that stereotypical, baggy-trousered boy bands are served up to international audiences, but original acts like Don Johnson Big Band have to release their first album independently, using its own money. The Helsinki-based band is young, and their album has already been out for a few months, yet not a single word has been written. Why? This debut album is possibly the year’s juiciest rhythm stick. Using hip-hop as a departure point, the four-member group explores the jungle of black music, flavoring the journey with traditional instrumentals. There’s no unnecessary noise or fake boy-artist act, just the calm self-assurance that the direction they’re heading in is the right one. This needs to be experienced live.
