Felix Zenger Beatbox
Date of birth:
23.12.1986
Place of birth:
Turku! (Finland)
Musical background:
I began taking (classical) piano lessons back in my pre-school days. In Espoo. After graduating from high school, I enrolled in the pop/jazz conservatory. I still play the piano. My mouth found some additional powers and began consciously transforming into an instrument when I was in high school, even though I may have made some strange noises earlier, too.
Our best show so far:
All the Tavastia shows have been great. Ruisrock 2006 was also really memorable.
Best show you have seen:
The Esbjörn Svensson Trio at the 2005 Tampere Jazz Happening. I got a last minute tip there would be another band performing with a human beatboxer, and of course jumped on a train all by myself to go and check it out. The band was good, but E.S.T. who played before them really blew me away.
A personal highlight in DJBB:
Innumerable.
Craziest or weirdest situation on tour:
Innumerable.
Killing time on the tour bus:
By listening to music and watching great TV shows. And by telling very poor jokes. Constantly.
How do you prepare for a show:
Warm up the voice. You have to make sure the vocal chords are prepared. Some tea, preferably with honey and lemon, really helps.
Favorite artists:
Innumerable.
First album you bought:
Stevie Wonder's "Jungle Fever". Listened to a tape of it in my dad's car even before I knew any English. For some reason I liked it a lot, especially the title track, and so Wonder's "Hotter Than July" soon followed as a Christmas present, along with my first CD player. Before Stevie Wonder, I mostly listened to children's music. Apparently, a group called "Pemmi, Pommi, and Gommi" was my favorite.
Albums you grew up with:
A lot of Stevie Wonder. Michael Jackson was bad, too. At home, I listened to a lot of my dad's many records.
My Ipod TOP-5 right now:
Don't have one.
Favorite song:
"Vieläkö on niitä villihevosia?" [a really whacky song about wild horses, hard to elaborate to anyone outside the band... - translator's note] (and the name of the song is actually "Villihevosia" -ed. note)
Favorite Dire Straits song:
Unfortunately, I do not know the band's repertoire well enough to answer.
Favorite DJBB song:
Tough choice, but "Two Reasons" is cool. Emma's rap is wicked!
Favorite DJBB live song:
Disco San Francisco
Favorite books:
I don't do enough reading.
Favorite movies:
Silver Arrow, and Disney's Pocahontas, dubbed into Finnish all by himself by some Estonian guy. Fun stuff.
Favorite TV show:
"Lost" and "Heroes" on the tour bus, against the will, if necessary. Other than that, I don't really watch a lot of TV.
Favorite food:
Nepalese food, or a good pizza.
Favorite drink:
Honey and lemon with tea. Mineral water.
Favorite animal:
Turku [his home town].
Place you'd like to go to:
India, and Australia.
Favorite time of the year:
I like them all, but cold really doesn't work for me.
Sunrise or sunset:
They're both lovely.
Worst nightmare:
Tinnitus. Though it would be quite nasty to wake up one day to notice that your lips have grown together.
Hobbies:
The piano, Footbag Freestyle, contemplation.
Bad habits:
Human Beatboxing?
Describe yourself with three words:
Funny peculiar nutcase...
Life philosophy:
Greetings!
The most important things in life:
Luv.
Instruments and equipment:
Felix. The Shure SM58.
