Juuso Hannukainen Percussion
Date of birth:
12.10.1978
Place of birth:
Espoo, Finland
Musical background:
It all began in silence, and ended in a roar of drums. I played piano at some point, but upon reaching my teens noticed that the bongos are where it's really at. After playing percussion for some years, I proceeded to notice that man can't play the drums as well as a machine. That was the beginning of a permanent symbiotic relationship with my favorite drummer, the Akai MPC drum machine and sampler.
Our best show so far:
Kerava, December 2006. The band was tight, the crowd was tight.
Best show you have seen:
The Avishai Cohen Trio at the North Sea Jazz Festival a couple of years ago. Great playing, great songs. Another sweet memory is from a Zion Train gig at the VR Makasiinit [old red brick railroad yard storage buildings that worked as a club setting for years, and that the city of Helsinki tore down in 2006, translator's note]. Some real UK stepper sound in the house that night, sirens were screaming, and the bass made your insides go soft.
A personal highlight in DJBB:
Every time I start playing the guica aka "the monkey torture drum".
Craziest or weirdest situation on tour:
What's truly weird is that people all over the country want to come and listen to our two note funk jams.
Killing time on the tour bus:
Studying or watching Twin Peaks.
How do you prepare for a show:
By slapping myself and my band mates on the thighs, conga slap style.
Favorite artists:
In addition to the ones mentioned above Tinariven, Pinch, Monolake, Boubacar Traore, Rpk, among others.
First album you bought:
Probably a cassette tape of some moronic children's music. But among my first own purchases was the "Edutainment" vinyl LP by Boogie Down Productions. I still occasionally listen to it.
Albums you grew up with:
My father's Jimi Hendrix albums were the shit.
Favorite albums of all time:
Ali Farka Toure: SavanneKing Tubby: Dub Gone Crazy
Murcof: Martes
Don Drummond:everything (nowadays mostly collections)
Thom Yorke: The Eraser
My Ipod TOP-5 right now:
Digital Mystics, Roots Manuva, Lacksley Castell, Adrian Sherwood, Andreas Tilliander, Various
Favorite song:
Autechre: Rsdio
Favorite Dire Straits song:
Money for Nothing
Favorite DJBB song:
Number 2 at the Hamburg concept.
Favorite DJBB live song:
Salt Water. Cause it's got the best and most essential rhythm in the world: Ragga. Three strikes, and you're out!
Favorite books:
I've been impressed by many of Jorge Amado's books. "Tent of Miracles" to name one.
Favorite movies:
Darren Aronofsky: PiFernando Meireilles: City of God
Favorite TV show:
Twin Peaks
Favorite food:
Indian and Nepalese food.
Favorite drink:
Mango Lassy.
Favorite animal:
Lizards are beautiful animals. I admire the way they move. They're also really efficient when it comes to destroying all kinds of scum-of-the-earth insects.
Place you'd like to go to:
Mali.
Favorite time of the year:
Spring.
Sunrise or sunset:
Sunrise is better, nightman as I may be.
Who would you like to meet:
Spede Pasanen [legendary Finnish comic and film producer, transl. note]. I'd like to sing a song with him.
Worst nightmare:
Competing in the Eurovision Song Contest with DJBB.
Hobbies:
I do hand stands and rock the reverb. And shake my booty at the Alas club jams in Helsinki.
Bad habits:
I'm fascinated by so many things, it's sometimes hard to focus.
Describe yourself with three words:
Thick, shaggy, and reverb-y.
Life philosophy:
Rhythms need to be parallell, not on top of one another.
The most important things in life:
Doing what you believe in. In my case, slapping the drums at festivals.
Instruments and equipment:
Hand made bongos, hand made shekere. A darbuga by Alexandria. A talking drum by Emin, timbales by Lp, Tito Puente signature series drum sticks, and a hat by Tauko.
