Kari Saarilahti Drums, Guitars, Bass

Date of birth:
29.11.1977

Place of birth:
Helsinki, Finland

Musical background:
I began playing the piano at the tender
age of eight and by the time I was 15 I
was playing my first electric guitar eight
hours a day. I started playing drums in
high school and switched to an electronic
drumset soon after DJBB was formed. I
also had to pick up the bass, basically
because no one else in the band would.
Been listening to every kind of music from classical to traditional sailor songs and inca music since my childhood.

Our best show so far:
Ruisrock festival in July 2007

Best show you have seen:
U2, Barcelona Palau St. Jordi 2001
John Abercrombie Quartet, April Jazz 2002
Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band, Groningen 2004
Mouse On Mars, Koneisto 2005
The Roots, Vanha 1997

A personal highlight in DJBB:
There are many. One of them occurred at Provinssirock festival in 2001 when we for the first time had the courage to check out the crowd from behind the curtains before our first ever festival gig. We thought that nobody would come but the tent was completely filled with people. Another similar moment was at Pori Jazz festival in 2003. Our second trip to Japan in 2007 was definitely a great highlight. Every Christmas gig at Tavastia Club in Hki. Right now writing songs for the next album feels just great!

Craziest or weirdest situation on tour:
Oh God. Luckily the human brain forgets the worst experiences easily. Once, while travelling with our minibus, we ran out of gas in the middle of the highway and we had to bushwalk our way through the Finnish woods by foot with Johannes to get some gas. We actually made it to the gig that night! On the other hand I remember the time when we mixed a radio version of "Private Intentions" on the back of our tour bus with Johannes. We’ve had our fair share of tour pranks as well, but I'll keep my mouth shut...

Killing time on the tour bus:
Sleeping, reading, playing poker and watching the adventures of Michael Knight with Johannes, Juuso and Tero. Sometimes we sing in three voices with Pekka and Tero on the back of the bus.

How do you prepare for a show:
After the soundcheck there’s usually a meal in which we gather around one big table like a family. Having arrived to our hotel, I always compete with Pekka to get my sign-in form filled before him, this happens like... every time. A fast shower before I change clothes and maybe some TV if there’s time. Right before the gig I do my routine push-ups with Tero to get the muscles warmed up. If I forget the push-ups, I do them after the second song, poorly hidden behind the drums while Felix is beatboxing.

First album you bought:
Miami Vice Original Soundtrack II on C-cassette in 1986 from a local department store called Stockmann. I was there to buy Europe’s "The Final Countdown" but to my great disappointment it was sold out. So the clerk offered Miami Vice instead as it was supposedly "just as good or even better". Been a Jan Hammer fan ever since.
