Pekka Kuusisto Violin
Date of birth:
7.10.1976
Place of birth:
Espoo, Finland
Musical background:
Homie 'bout to get lazy right now. You can check out homie's bio at harrisonparrott.com - they do my management for all musical action outside Finland.
Our best show so far:
Henry's Pub in dear old Kuopio in December 2006. Insane. It felt like the whole band was exceptionally prone to set themselves free that night... Like part of all that mayhem was sort of brought on by deep emotion and necessity, not so much by thinking.
Best show you have seen:
There are far too many to make a list, but just to be an ass, I'll say Foo Fighters at Helsinki's Tavastia. If you're into chamber music, the Australian Chamber Orchestra is always a sure shot.
A personal highlight in DJBB:
During the "DJBB" recording sessions, I was able to come up with an ovulation, I mean modulation, into the last chorus of "Last Things", and Tero literally dropped down when he heard it. That's the power of key changes, man. Another highlight could have been a violin solo in "No. 2 At The Hamburg Concept", which included some of the nastiest sounds I've ever produced. But those silky-ass pussies didn't have the balls to leave it in. I mean, I've played notes like that in the suburbs of East Helsinki way back when I was a little kid, and there's never been a problem... But come and play with this uptown band that's got a gold spoon up their collective ass, and it's bye-bye to the avant-garde, y'all.
Craziest or weirdest situation on tour:
I once bought a bottle of beer at a gas station pit stop, not knowing there was a full case of free beer waiting in the bus... But at least mine was cold.
Killing time on the tour bus:
Listening to music and sleeping are the most common past times. Sometimes, you have those lovely moments when you're a bit run down, you know, tired and all smiles, and some great landscape open up behind the window. Something moves inside you, and it's easy to understand how touring musicians can forget about the outside world. It could, after all, be the most beautiful day of our lives, and maybe the bus should slow down so that the journey never ends.
How do you prepare for a show:
When touring with DJBB, I'm not one of those cats who has to masturbate until their foreskin is sore before every show. My preparation is pretty much set by the sound check and the previous night's homework. It's no sin to sleep, and after a little nap, it's always nice to have a chat with your roommate while putting on your make-up or, say, inserting a tampon. You really get this sense of togetherness.
Favorite artists:
It's 2 am, and there are hundreds, so... not gonna happen. I'd say Björk is probably the greatest living piece of art.
First album you bought:
"Diggi Loo Diggi Ley" by Herrey's [Swedish band known for their Eurovision fame - translator's note]. Wonderful music, just like the follow-up "Crazy People". Just think, if Herrey's somehow got themselves in some time-space continuum rupture, and performed today just like they did back in the 80's… I for one would be a hell of a lot more scared by them than by Lordi. Especially in a dark alley. Hejsan!
Albums you grew up with:
Prokofiev's ballet "Romeo And Juliet". "Super Disco Dancing" which was an album we had at home with some great hits like "Rasputin". Every album by Toto, but numbers four and seven in particular. The soundtracks for "Ghostbusters" and "Beverly Hills Cop 2". That "Europe" album. A big part of my life was making my own cassette compilations of stuff that was on the radio. Pretty scary stuff, looking back.
Favorite albums of all time:
Impossible, impossible... For me, some of the most important have been "Danish Imports" by Svend Asmussen and Ulrik Neumann, "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis, U2's "Achtung Baby", Radiohead's "OK Computer", and "Rok" by Rinneradio, but there are tens of other albums right up there on par with them.
My Ipod TOP-5 right now:
1. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto Number 3 by Rinaldo Alessandrini and the Concerto Italiano2. "Hide And Seek" by Imogen Heap
3. "The Eraser" by Thom Yorke
4. "Kesäkaverit" by PMMP
5. "Communication" by The Cardigans
Favorite song:
"Var Det En Dröm", composed by Jean Sibelius, lyrics written by Johan Wecksell.
Favorite Dire Straits song:
Oh, c'mon... "Sultans of Swing".
Favorite DJBB song:
"Private Intentions", with the live version chords.
Favorite DJBB live song:
That depends. The crowd reaction to "One MC..." is always a nice slap on the buttocks. "Private Intentions" is a real chorus celebration, and getting eye contact with Johannes during a so called "good chord" is a highlight to any evening. The Guru Josh finale of "Nightman" is just plain euphoric.
Favorite books:
"Drakarna över Helsingfors" by Kjell Westö, Leonardo Da Vinci's Notebooks, "Voimattomuus" by Pirkko Saisio.
Favorite movies:
"Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould" by François Girard"Amadeus" by Milos Forman
"Elizabethtown" by Cameron Crowe
"Sånger från andra våningen" by Roy Andersson
"Sarabande" by Ingmar Bergman
Favorite TV show:
"Banzai"
Favorite food:
Reindeer. The Special Meal with Hot Orient sauce at Viitasaari's legendary Scan Burger.
Favorite drink:
Milk. Beer and wine are pretty dominant, but I'll drink most of everything.
Favorite animal:
The Platypus.
Place you'd like to go to:
Harstad in Northern Norway.
Favorite time of the year:
Summer, or the light and snowy late winter in Lapland.
Sunrise or sunset:
Sunrise.
Who would you like to meet:
Johann Sebastian Bach.
Worst nightmare:
Nuclear war.
Hobbies:
Attempts to write songs take up all my spare time nowadays.
Bad habits:
DJBB
Describe yourself with three words:
Fuck the Millennium
Life philosophy:
Nothing is as easy as enjoying yourself.
The most important things in life:
To seek and to find. Consciousness. Emotions. The balance between control and the incontrollable. Humility. Recognizing ones own achievements. The ability to communicate respect towards others. Nature. Sounds and chords. Inspiration and the ability to find it again and again. Goddamn, you gotta love this life cause it's probably the only one you're gonna get.
Instruments and equipment:
When playing with this band, random electric violins, a couple of Line6's, a Digitech Whammy, the Nord Electro and Korg T3 synthesizers, and a liberating vocal mic, most commonly a five-eight, the Shure SM 58 classic. Sometimes you gotta play the heck out of a miniature Les Paul by Epiphone.
