Verneri Pohjola Trumpet

Date of birth:
23.12.1977

Place of birth:
Helsinki, Finland

Musical background:
My first interest was movie soundtracks, and then rock music. I played a little bit of everything as a novice, before the trumpet (which I played in an orchestra) became my biggest interest. At first, I stuck to classical, but after my brother introduced me to some jazz albums, I became more and more enthusiastic about jazz. I've continued playing the piano and drums, to fend off boredom.

Our best show so far:
The last gig in Foxia, in Oulu, November 2006. I was so overly exhausted that my mind was completely blank. Everything went great, and it was a sweet gig.

Best show you have seen:
Tys Tys live in Bath, England, Summer 2005. Me and my fellow band members from Ilmiliekki all stood side by side and cried.

A personal highlight in DJBB:
Playing the solo for "Jack" on the last album. A pretty succesful Miles pastiche in my view.

Craziest or weirdest situation on tour:
When we played in Ähtäri some years ago, and got to jump off a bridge into the river. That was great. Playing forest golf at Tero's summer place was fun, too. That was also the first time I've ever rowed a boat to an accommodation after a show, in the middle of the night no less.

Killing time on the tour bus:
I'm a member of the Lost/Heroes mafia.

How do you prepare for a show:
Playing long notes and going through different song parts in my head.

Favorite artists:
Disco

First album you bought:
I do believe it was the soundtrack for "Back To The Future 3". It featured some great western sci-fi film music, played by a symphony orchestra. And even a violin/country version of ZZ-Top's "Doubleback".

My mom's favorites, "My Spanish Heart" by Chick Corea, and some collection by Manhattan Transfer.
